PRESS RELEASE

We’ve Got Your Back!

With school back in session, it’s time to think about how backpacks can affect the bodies of children. Some kids are pulling bags which can cause twisting of the body.  Others use one shoulder sling bags which can force one side to work harder than the other.  An increasing number of children and adolescents are suffering from back, neck, and shoulder pain.  A major contributor to this pain is the misuse of backpacks.

If children are carrying too much weight on their backs and shoulders, it could cause direct injury to the spine, strain the muscles, or just plain wear them out.  Dr. Kelly recognizes this growing problem and offers some help for protecting each child’s back. Here are some traditional backpack safety tips.

Make sure the backpack weighs no more than 5 – 10% of the child’s weight.

Make sure the backpack never hangs more than 4 inches below the waist.

Use a backpack that has wide, padded shoulder straps.

Encourage the child to use both shoulder straps for equal support and if the backpack has a waist strap, use it to take some of the pressure off the child’s back.

These simple tips combined with your chiropractic care can really help relieve pain caused by backpacks!!

National Insitute of Health:

Press Release:

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) 1 in 9 children use alternative medicine.  Chiropractic is the second most common type of alternative medicine used.  But how can chiropractic care be useful to a kid?  Remember when your child was first born and you held him or her in your arms - you looked at them and saw great promise for their future – physically, mentally, socially and spiritually – a doctor, teacher, great mom, lawyer – not your average sick stressful adult you see around you everyday.  Chiropractic helps to make sure your child fulfills their full potential.  We work on removing interference to your nervous system – similar to static on a telephone line.  You can’t understand what is being said on the phone and you get stressed. Chiropractic makes sure the spine is working well (so there is no static on the line) by sending a message to the brain, then the brain tells the body exactly what to do to heal.  There are many gentle chiropractic techniques.  Tree of Life Chiropractic uses the activator method, which is a “back cracking-free” technique.  For more information visit our website at www.chirotree.com.  Some other helpful websites are www.activator.com (to learn more about the activator method).  Dr. Kelly Synowiec-Moroney at Tree of Life Chiropractic is trained to adjust children, but to find a doctor of chiropractic in your area check out the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association website at www.icpa4kids.org.
